Eurydice

The music, the libretto, the singers, the characters, the scenery, the costumes — everything came together in a very clever and immensely fun new opera for the ages.

The Tale of Turandot

The production was very artistically imagined, from the projections to the astronomical clock painting on the floor and the beautiful puppets. The acting was outstanding,... There was great camp and slapstick throughout.

My 9-year-old summed up the experience quite nicely when he said, “I loved it. Can we come back tomorrow?”

Nick Dear's Frankenstein | California Premiere

“Frankenstein” is one of the most complex productions the classic theater company has attempted. Michetti made thoughtful choices in his direction, producing a gothic horror tale that is at once chilling and heart-rending. While some versions of Shelley’s story can get gory (like Mark Grey’s 2019 opera adaptation, for instance) Michetti steers away from that — with just a touch of bloodiness in a critical scene. The set design, including four mirrored moveable panels and wood beams suspended from the ceiling, was perfect in its simplicity.

“Frankenstein” is one of the best stories ever written, and A Noise Within’s production is one of the most electrifying adaptations you’ll see. Don’t miss it!

Mama Metal

The actors are, across the board, phenomenal — with plenty of theater and TV credits to their names. Even though Sterling complains, “This is my play,” Sauls makes sure this is unquestionably Sterling’s play. But, yes, Sherman is amazing, absolutely mesmerizing to watch in her various iterations of Belle.

What Matters Now?/! (Another Political Pop-Up of the Theatrical Kind)

Not surprisingly, there are a lot of intense topics in the short plays presented here, including families separated at the border, reparations for slavery, the Israel/Palestine conflict, and sexual assault allegations against a Supreme Court Justice. Yet you'll be entertained.

And you'll definitely have plenty to talk about after the show. Open Fist has created the perfect place to do that...

The ensemble is without a weak link. Before you know it, the actors have breezed through some fabulous nuggets of theater in 75 minutes, but your head is full of more questions — ones that we will all face together as a nation.

HANSEL AND GRETEL

As we've come to expect from LA Opera, the cast delivered a pitch-perfect performance... To hear the Los Angeles Children's Chorus sing was the cherry on top of LA Opera's “Hansel and Gretel” treat.

The Woman in Black

“The Woman in Black” is quite simply a masterpiece of theater, a literary ghost story told in the dark that plays on our fears and entertains in the way that only the best stories can. These are two entertaining hours I would gladly spend again.

WICKED LIT: THE CHIMES & THE CORPSE

Fantastic production values without great actors wouldn't add up to much, and the Wicked Lit actors are at the top of their game. Not only can they all act, but they can do it surrounded by an audience so close at times they could reach out and touch them — unlike some movie stars who can't focus with anyone in their eye line and require multiple takes. If I were to give a shout out, I'd have to list every single person in the cast... For lovers of ghost stories of all kinds, Wicked Lit is one of the best treats of the Halloween season. If you don't immediately think of Wicked Lit when everything pumpkin spice rolls out, try it this year — and start a new fall tradition. Since 2013, Wicked Lit has sold every ticket to every performance, so don't wait! Some shows are already sold out.

Native Gardens

With fast-paced dialogue, ninety minutes fly by like the days and nights in the play — which are cleverly indicated on signs by three hilarious gardeners (Julian Armaya, Bradley Roa II and Richard Biglia) who dance into the gardens between scenes.

Gloria

The tragedy of “Gloria” takes us by surprise, but the playwright helps us deal with what we've witnessed. We can relate — and we start to rethink our place in other people's life stories.

What Happened When

But my first instinct to see what reviewers of the first run of this show had called “riveting,” “chilling” and “shocking” was right. This was one of the most powerful theater experiences I've ever had... This is a taut 65 minutes with superb playwriting and phenomenal acting. There are spots of humor as the haunting story unfolds, but there is not really any release until the final moment — when I couldn't hold back the tears. A must see.
