A hilarious & seedy tour-de-force roller coaster ride of after-hour whiskey shots, horror films and rock & roll. Dan Ruth shares dark comic monologues, interwoven with characters he's encountered while working & drinking in the bars & dives of per-gentrified NYC with universal results.

"I am so grateful that Dan came to do his show in Los Angeles and that I could witness a genius of comedy, a master of characters, a skilled story teller. WOW!!!! I've been telling everyone to go see his show in which Dan is several different people, so accurately, in a hilarious way. He switches from one person to the other effortlessly. Through out the show Dan gives everything, he is fully committed and I couldn't take my eyes off of him!! And the show's ending keeps you, reflecting, respectful, uplifted… It's a fabulous ride. Congratulations!! I can't wait to see Dan take over the stage again!!"

“A Life behind Bars” is anchored by a tour-de-bar-by-force performance by Dan Ruth, who's gritty aggrieved ride through NYC's neighborhood scene of the 80's-90's is just the antidote for those longing for a more destructive and vital world. The most physical, daring and wild performance of the Fringe. I love watching him on stage.

"Storytelling can be casual. It can be challenging. It can be insightful. Stories can be funny, sad, inspirational, depressing or so many other things. When you find a performer who can seamlessly blend aspects of all the above into a single, insightful show… there is reason to celebrate. Dan Ruth is such a performer. ...The beauty here is how every aspect of the show lands with honesty. Each character demands to be heard in their own way and you want to spend time with most of them. (Others, well… we've all run into some jerks at a local bar, right? Those folks are here too and they have their place.)"

"This play is what the Fringe Festival is all about. A well-designed & perfectly performed one-man-show. Dan Ruth's writing is on point!"

"Dan Ruth as the sole actor on a darkened stage is mesmerizing. His frantic movements; body and face contortions, and voice inflections are fascinating as he explains the sad, lonely and underrated life a Brooklyn bartender faced in his inevitable alcoholism downfall. This is not simply a journey of redemption, it is a renewal of the spirit."

"If you can only see one show at The Hollywood Fringe, A Life Behind Bars needs to be that show! I saw it earlier this year at SoloFest. It is fantastic! Dan Ruth is an amazing performer. He wraps you up in the characters he's developed and takes you on a wonderful ride into the Brooklyn bar life. I laughed, cried and laughed some more. Just fantastic! Run to the Fringe to see this!!"

"Dan's show is ome the best one man comedy shows I have ever seen. He brings the characters to life in your own imagination with his storytelling in the way that Lilly Tomlin's "Search for Sign of Intelligent Life in the Universe" did back in the 80s."

"If you see one show during the Fringe Festival, make it A Life Behind Bars. Every aspect of this show is incredible! From the writing to the performances of all the different characters, Dan Ruth delivers. I laughed, I cried and I missed living in Brooklyn. LA is very lucky to have this show in town once again!"

"Saw Dan Ruth at Solofest earlier this year, and his show “A Life Behind Bars” did not disappoint!! Besides being uber talented at character acting, Dan also flexes his writing muscles admirably in this one-man show. The timing, the range of emotions he elicits from the audience (be prepared to laugh—a lot—and Kleenex isn't a bad idea, either), and Dan's authenticity regarding the genesis of his show make for a truly meaningful experience. Going to see the show again at the Lounge Theater in June with friends in tow....Don't miss it!"

Dan Ruth's solo performance takes you on an amazing journey that makes you feel you are right there with him experiencing the highs and lows of his life behind and in front of bars in the everchanging land of NYC and Brooklyn. Total tour de force that cannot be missed!"
