"A joy to experience...as good as it gets" - Theatre Notes

Tony and SAG Award nominee, winner of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award (Best Solo Performance 2015), Orson Bean, returns to Pacific Resident Theatre in the world premiere of “Alright Then,” co-starring Alley Mills.

Directed by Guillermo Cienfuegos (Ovation Award and Los Angeles Drama Critic's Circle Award for Best Director), Alright Then was inspired by Bean's multi-award winning companion piece SAFE AT HOME: An Evening with Orson Bean. As one of America's best-known raconteurs, and an undisputed triple threat, Orson Bean has entertained several generations of audiences in all forms of media.

In his latest comical and genuine extravaganza, he and Alley Mills recount a magical but unlikely meeting that changed the course of their lives forever. A funny, vivid, and synchronistic journey about two artists who beat the odds in the world of entertainment, love…and marriage.

Alright Then runs Thursdays – Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 3pm through April 15, 2018. Pacific Resident Theatre is located at 703 Venice Blvd. in Venice, CA 90291. Tickets are $25 - $34 and can be purchased online at http://www.pacificresidenttheatre.com or by calling (310) 822-8392. [email protected]

"So for now let's agree that Alright Then is a lot of rambling, mostly benign, even inspired banter, generated by the improbable love affair of two engaging human beings."

"The storytelling feels spontaneous, even though it is meticulously shaped and paced under Guillermo Cienfuegos' direction. Above all, genuineness is this show's special magic — laughter, pecking kisses, grateful tears."

"The longtime married couple may have a 22-year age gap, but the chemistry, love and friendship they share is timeless. The pair are playful and affectionate throughout the evening, though much of their narrative tells of heavy childhood trauma and familial strife, too often taking the pair away from conversation with one other."

"Ably directed by Guillermo Cienfuegos, Alright Then is a charming and honest portrayal of the true-life love story that continues to unfold for the couple, even after 27 years of marriage... Filled with an array of emotions, what we in the audience are left with is the joy of the performance and the life affirming sense that through love, commitment, and passion, life is not only endurable, it's worthwhile."

"While both Bean and Mills ably handle the heavy dramatics of their respective defining childhood incidents, Bean seems much more alive and comfortable name-dropping fun incidents with Raul Julia, Barbra Streisand, Henry Fonda and Gene Kelly. A most natural story-teller, hard to distinguish when Bean ad libs off script or is actually reciting his (and Mills) written words. Bean's stand-alone jokes sprinkled sparingly throughout remind of what made his younger-days stand-up so successful."
