AMERICAN CONSPIRACY, a powerful new drama written by Benjamin Schwartz, will premiere at The Lounge Theatre for the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2018. The hour-long political thriller reunites former collaborators Ritchey and Schwartz, who won multiple awards in the 2016 Hollywood Fringe, including ‘Best Cabaret/Variety' and a coveted ‘Top of the Fringe' nomination for their show, Angel's Flight.

Set in the early 1980s, American Conspiracy is the tale of two families and one violent assassination attempt on a United States president. A daughter trying to save her family's run down diner, and a son looking for alternative ways to get his family's oil business out of debt both parallel and juxtapose one another to explore the ultimate conspiracy: the American Dream. This is the culminating MFA project from Schwartz, who has been researching and developing the story, and script, for almost three years.

Featuring Spencer Cantrell, Katelyn Schiller, Amy Smallman-Winston, Hank Doughan, David Lee Garver, and Edward Hendershott. Directed by Matt Ritchey.

According to playwright Benjamin Schwartz, this is a story about family. How we abuse each other, positively and negatively. And that part of the script is crystal clear, as is the writing in the development of the relationships. What isn't always, is Schwartz's choice to showcase family relationships through this particular story. Although, it does make for some interesting melo-drama. ...Incredibly well-done overall by all the players. Direction by Matt Ritchey really holds this piece together.

Benjamin Schwartz has crafted a deft little piece that begins like a Zen Koan and concludes like a bear trap. The operation and engagement of such a paradoxical Rube Goldberg would be the undoing of a lesser director but Matt Ritchey enjoys the fortunate fusion of skill and clarity called for.

Schwartz's script has potential and I hope that this fringe outing is a step on its journey rather than the final destination... American Conspiracy still holds our attention thanks to Ritchey's strong direction, some good humor, and some fine performances, namely Hank Doughan as Hinckley in the calm before the storm. RECOMMENDED

Schwartz has set himself a difficult task—crafting a tale of two families' hopes and despair about The American Dream with a troubled young man's path to assassinating a President... A more linear story structure and perhaps a scene between the brothers would greatly add to the impact. The cast is capable and fully inhabit their roles but another draft of the script is needed to achieve true success.
