[Ghosts: A Whole New Immersive Theater] Based on Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts Directed by Jonghee Woo Produced by Dream Walker in collaboration with Sal Mannino “I almost think we are all of us ghosts, Pastor Manders. It is not only what we have inherited from our father and mother that “walks” in us. It is all sorts of dead ideas, and lifeless old beliefs, and so forth.." - Helene Alving, from the play ABOUT DREAM WALKER'S GHOSTS GHOSTS is an immersive theatrical experience based on Henrik Ibsen's play of the same title. This world premiere is created by international theatre company, Dream Walker, and explores the multiple shades of morality in the 19th century. The original play, Ghosts, is a scathing commentary on 19th-century morality. Because of its subject matter, which includes religion, venereal disease, incest and euthanasia, it immediately generated strong controversy and negative criticism. Since then the play has fared better, and is considered a “great play” that historically holds a position of “immense importance” SYNOPSYS Helene Alving has spent her life suspended in an emotional void after the death of her cruel but outwardly charming husband. She is determined to escape the ghosts of her past by telling her son, Oswald, the truth about his father. But on his return from his life as a painter in Madrid, Oswald reveals how he has already inherited the legacy of Alving's dissolute life. Dream Walker has limitless potential in the immersive theatre sphere, should they choose to take that route; they only need to instill a sense of audience agency, be it via presentation or interactivity, that makes the immersion palpable.  As such, this production of Ghosts is a welcome one, unfortunately marred by its mislabeling as “immersive;”  it functions perfectly well as an innovative approach to a traditional play without relying on a production style that it fails to execute.

I found this production beautiful. However, I truly dislike this play. I read the piece many years ago but this is the first time I have ever seen it performed and I am grateful I saw this version. Even though the overall tone felt grim and depressing, the characters were portrayed with an honesty that was, at times, brutally unsettling. There is so much being done right here… but the piece does not speak to me, personally.

Director Johnghee Woo creates a dark, brooding atmosphere. The play's action is slow and sustained and the emotion is often overwrought. Video projections, also designed by Woo, create depth and rich texture. Excellent sound design by Davy Sumner is moody and dark, electronic and all-encompassing. Briana Pattillo's lighting design is innovative and dramatic. Set designer Carlo Maghirang makes the room feel massive by placing a steel frame over a dining room table in the center of the playing area... Dream Walker is certainly a company to keep on the radar, as the theatre they're creating appeals to young people and engages a modern audience. Ghosts… is more than just a play. It's an experience.
