FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Publicity Contact: SANDRA KUKER PR Email: [email protected] EL GATO ROJO PRODUCTIONS & PROMENADE PLAYHOUSE PRESENT THE WORLD PREMIERE OF I AM CHARLIE Opening September 14 running through October 21, 2018 (Press are invited to attend Opening Night or any available performance) LOS ANGELES (August 11, 2018)– Promenade Playhouse and El Gato Rojo Productions present the world premiere of playwright Stephen A Cardinal's “I AM CHARLIE.” The intense drama will be directed by Tom Waters, starring Joe Le Mieux, and opens September 14 through October 21, 2018. Additional information and tickets will go on sale 8/15 through www.promenadeplayhouse.com ABOUT THE SHOW I Am Charlie explores the question: Why is the Charlie meme chiseled in granite when other 20th Century memes (JFK, for example) are completely and continuously malleable? Most people will agree what was bizarre in 1969 would be old news in a few days and forgotten in a week. I Am Charlie is NOT the play you were expecting about Charles Manson. It looks at the Charles Manson story (Among other things) through the mind of Charlie himself. REGARDING STAGING FOR I AM CHARLIE The plot uses stage devices and audio-visual technology to immerse the audience as participants. The audience becomes part of the play. The distance between fact and fiction is reduced, mimicking the blurring of truth and fiction in contemporary news media. Because we don't really know the complete fact and fiction of the Manson story and the effects it has had on society in the last fifty years the play leaves it up to the audience to make that judgment on their own. "I Am Charlie plays out a bit on the softer side of a psychotic killer, with Manson characterized as an almost fun-loving trickster who just popped out of a Jack in the Box. The material is interesting and in depth, but there is so much to digest that the points occasionally get drowned out by the attempted cleverness of the script. Well cast physically and vocally, lead actor Joe Le Mieux keenly portrays Manson in all of his deluded, unaffected psychosis. The pace is a bit too slow though and it interrupts the possibility of going along for the imaginative ride with the material."
