Jane Austen's enduring love story is brought to life as a romantic-comedy musical. The story revolves around Emma, a well-meaning, but disaster-prone matchmaker, who ignores her own romantic feelings while setting out to find a suitor for her friend Harriet. Her efforts go awry, of course, leading to comic complications. We invite you to fall in love again with one of Jane Austen's most adored characters, featuring an intelligent and buoyant score from Tony-nominated composer Paul Gordon (Jane Eyre).

Director Long has just the right light touch, never forgetting this is a butterfly of a musical, not a grounded caterpillar. He infuses it with humor, heart, and a sly, gossip-tinged flavor and the result is divine.

Despite its concision, the musical effectively captures a key strength of the novel: an understanding that love cannot be predicted or channeled; it goes where it will.

Featuring an intelligent and exceedingly witty score from Tony-nominated Composer Paul Gordon, (who also provided the book,) his lyrics are blithe, bubbly, astute and amusing while remaining 100% true to Austen's fundamental intent..in any case, few if any, previous versions capture the buoyant energy and unabashed fun as wonderfully as this new production now playing in Anaheim California!

Sparklingly tuneful, witty, and romantic as all get-out, Jane Austen's Emma: The Musical proves a perfect companion piece to Chance Theater's previous, frequently revived holiday offerings. I couldn't have loved it more.

Impeccable in every respect, Chance Theater's staging brims with effervescence and wit. With a solid cast of 13, skilled direction from Casey Long, and design elements that complement the nature and themes of the novel, it's all fans of Austen's work could hope for.

...director Casey Long — Chance's affable founder and managing director — threads the needle in “Emma.” The tone is engaging, the narrative through line is largely engrossing and the performances he has helped his actors find keeps things frothy and firm in equal measure.

EMMA, now playing at the Chance Theater in Anaheim through December 23rd, is like a perfect tea time confection. It's lovely, sweet, and has just enough tartness to keeping it all from getting too sticky to enjoy.
