A gender-bending, patriarchy-smashing, hilarious new take on the classic tale. Robin Hood is (and has always been) Maid Marian in disguise, and leads a motley group of Merry Men (few of whom are actually men) against the greedy Prince John. As the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, who will stand for the vulnerable if not Robin? What is the cost of revealing your true self in a time of trouble? Modern concerns and romantic entanglements clash on the battlefield and on the ramparts of Nottingham Castle. A play about selfishness and selflessness and love deferred and the fight. Always the fight. The fight must go on.

"As is usual for NOTE, the ensemble is golden, especially the indominable Kirsten Vangsness in the title role—er, roles, as Mr. Hood is indeed Marian in disguise in this version—and Joel Sher as a bejeweled Paul Lyndian Prince John, who can't keep from screaming out the name of his exiled brother Richard whenever he releases his royal seed into the honeypot of his favorite court concubine. Adam Szymkowicz' welcome and well-timed gender-bending script might be better than it comes off here, but what he has to say is so buried in the bizarrely misfired staging by Christopher Johnson that it's hard to tell."

"MARIAN is silly and funny and sly and cute. If this were a high school production, it would be a winner. Except, of course, that a high school production might run into some censorship issues. Fight scenes represent a sizeable portion of the action – certainly a bit more than necessary. Although the show seems to tout feminism and female power, it doesn't quite make the grade. Nor does the ending, which seems to fly in the face of fairy tales. In short, MARIAN doesn't quite cut it as a farce, a comedy, a swashbuckler, a satire, or a dramedy. It rides that awkward spot that doesn't quite satisfy any of these possibilities."

"The play, by Adam Szymkowicz, is imaginatively directed by Christopher Johnson... It's a fast-paced, sometimes confusing 99-minute ride that includes many comical turns, a few “naughty” bits, and a hefty display of sword play and quarterstaff clashes (effectively choreographed by Jen Albert and Dawn “Sam” Alden). The script could use trimming, but the show is nevertheless entertaining and fun. - RECOMMENDED"

"The story hits most of the main points of the Robin Hood myth: in a time of tyranny (cough, cough) an outlaw hides in Sherwood Forest, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. There's the infamous archery contest, a prison break (or two), and plentiful romance. Here, of course, is the crux, as this version asks us what would be different if Robin Hood were Marion in disguise, and if folks in Sherwood were a bit more forward thinking about love. Love in this forest flows freely in multiple directions with twist and turns. Lesbians will out themselves as gay men and there is even an appropriate discussion of pronouns amid the rejection of assigned gender."
