As a little girl in Japan, Ai wanted to move to America to marry her crush, River Phoenix. Unfortunately he died before she even made it across the Pacific. However, Ai was determined to find her own River Phoenix. She convinced her strict Japanese father that she was not submissive enough to marry a Japanese man, so she had to go to America. Her father made her promise three things: No religion, No guns, No drugs. Come to this show to laugh at a surprisingly messed up story.

Must see!!!!! I absolutely fell in love with Ai and it seems like anyone who watched walked out with this same feeling !! Her show is brilliant, and she is outstanding! Hilarious, relatable, real, comfortable! It's so easy to watch Ai and be captivated by her story telling. It's by my far one of the Best Solo Performance I've seen!!! I loved everything! I loved all of Ai's characters, her dad, her gay friend… all of them! I loved her commitment and sincerity and how comfortable she is on stage! It didn't feel like a performance, in the best way possible!!! Congratulations Ai!!!

I absolutely loved this show!! So funny, honest, heartwarming and sweet! Ai is amazing. And the River Phoenix projections were hilarious. The honesty and humor — even when the story takes a dark turn — of this piece was so refreshing and heartwarming. This is a one-woman show and Ai is such an engaging and entertaining stage presence.

I really enjoyed this show. Ai has encapsulated her story into an entertaining package with plenty of fun and humor but also grounded in reality and touching upon universal issues and anxieties that we all deal with. She's a likable character that can appeal to wide audiences. Way to go Ai!

WHAT I LIKED What isn't there to like about Ai? She's a charming and seemingly shy Japanese woman who will win you over with her smile and charm. But don't be fooled, she has learned to curse like a true American and will show you she's way stronger than she appears to be… MY OVERALL IMPRESSION Ai wanted to leave Japan for America in order to meet her River Phoenix, the iconic American actor who died tragically young and whose sensitivity sparked a desire in this 9 year old little girl. She wouldn't settle until she met her idol in an American white male who would resemble River Phoenix and, one fine day, her dream came true. Or was it her nightmare?

Now to be fair, I did see this show during previews, still it felt to me unready to be seen. Yoshihara was delightfully funny and had a unique view to share, but the show seems too unsteady to serve as a platform for her talents.

Fun, funny, poignant with extremely clever comedic writing. Both the story and character are riveting throughout this humorous look at one person's very serious journey.

The show was awesome! I am also a woman from Japan, but I think this show should be great for everyone who enjoys honest voice and sense of humor on cultural differences. I went to watch this show with zero info, then I quickly realized that the show was a treat to me. Every single detail of Ai's story evoked my laughter as absolute truth. The pacing and structure was nicely tight, there was no dull moment all the way from beginning to the end. I'm so glad that I found this show and Ai.

Ai is amazing in "My Own Private River Phonenix." Her command of the house as the sole actor is impressive. She eloquently mixes comedy and sadness with real life issues that we can all relate to. I really enjoyed her creativity in playing various characters and even using inserted video to portray her on going dreams. Ai is very real and genuine. She grabs the audience's attention and maintains it throughout the show. Well done!

Go see this show! Ai is a funny funny woman! She tells the story of her "love" life in America and how an Asian woman deals with being in America and what it's like being with a white guy. It's a wonderful story and Ai is very talented and entertaining. I would highly recommend this show. You won't find anything else like it.

I saw this show earlier this year at the LA Women's Theater Festival and I would highly recommend to go see it. Ai Yoshihara is very entertaining and funny as she tells about her experiences first coming to the US from Japan. Her dark sense of humor constantly surprises and keeps the audience on its feet. The different characters she plays are all very funny too. And besides all the humor, there are even some emotional parts too. It was also interesting to hear about her experiences and impressions as a young Japanese woman living in the US. They were quite funny and definitely not what I expected. All in all, this is an unexpectedly unique and fun show. It's only playing a couple nights, so I would definitely recommend to see it if you have the chance. I promise you will laugh and be entertained!
