One of the most powerful stage experiences of recent years, Next to Normal is about the seemingly picture perfect Goodman family. However, Diana, the mother, is a little too happy. Her husband Dan constantly worries. Her daughter Natalie is awfully intent on getting that scholarship to Yale. And her son Gabe, well…This Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning rock musical is a heartbreaking, humorous and unflinchingly authentic look at a suburban family struggling with the effects bipolar disorder.

Set to a pulsating rock score by Tom Kitt (American Idiot) with a powerhouse female lead at its core, Next to Normal will leave you breathless.

"In their current production of NEXT TO NORMAL, the East West Players present a first-rate, extremely well-executed musical look at mental illness. 2009 Tony winners for Best Original Score - Brian Yorkey for lyrics and Tom Kitt for music - would be most proud of this delicious convergence of incredible creative talents that gel so well together (onstage and off)."

NEXT TO NORMAL SUPERCHARGED WITH HEART

Even now, it's not too long ago that Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt's musical Next To Normal received three Tony Awards back in 2009, followed by a national tour that included a visit to the Ahmanson Theatre where I first experienced this powerful musical. The story centers on a mother who struggles with bipolar disorder, and how her illness affects her family as they struggle to find a cure. With its small cast size and modest set requirements, Next To Normal offers innumerable staging potential for stages of all sizes. Now East West Players offers LA audiences a stirring and poignant production of this musical that is spearheaded by its prodigious cast. "

"Though the East West Players' 51st-anniversary season finale isn't quite the Next To Normal I was hoping for, if nothing else it provides its two stars with characters they were born to play. Roles-of-a-lifetime don't come around every day, and it's worth seeing Next To Normal to see Deedee Magno Hall and Cliffton Hall in these."

Travis Michael Holder
"This dynamic remounting of a truly arresting modern classic, under the direction of the venerated Nancy Keystone, presents East West Players at the top of its game and the night belongs to Deedee Magno Hall, whose performance as Diana is one of the most memorable highlights of the season in our barren reclaimed desert climes. Never once does she miss a beat, segueing from scene work and monologues into the musical numbers without taking a breath or stopping to fill her lungs before instantly interpreting Kitt and Yorkey's incredible rock ballads like Joplin on amphetamines."
